Apple Updates Age Verification Policies for Developers
Apple has announced new age verification requirements for developers in several regions including Australia, Brazil, and Singapore. As of February 24, users in these countries will be unable to download apps rated 18+ unless they have been confirmed as adults through an App Store age confirmation process.
New Age Assurance Tools
Developers are required to use Apple’s APIs to meet upcoming regulatory requirements. The new tools include automatic age verification via the App Store, and a Declared Age Range API for independent user verification. In Brazil, apps with loot boxes will be automatically rated 18+ due to recent laws preventing such features from being accessible to children.
Regulations in Utah and Louisiana
In addition to international regulations, Apple has also updated its policies for developers operating in Utah and Louisiana. These states have upcoming laws that require age verification through the Declared Age Range API to restrict access by minors to inappropriate apps. Developers must inform parents of significant app updates affecting children’s use.
Potential Fines and Compliance
Non-compliance with these regulations can result in substantial fines for developers. In Utah, parents may recover up to $1,000 per violation, while Louisiana imposes a fine of up to $10,000 after a 45-day grace period. Apple itself could face significant penalties if it fails to comply with platform-level requirements in Brazil, Australia, and Singapore.
Privacy Concerns
Apple has been cautious about implementing age verification methods that involve data collection or sharing personal information due to privacy concerns. The company prefers automated processes over manual submissions of identification documents.
