Google Maps Adds Gemini AI-Powered ‘Ask Maps’ Feature and 3D Immersive Navigation

Google Maps Enhances with Gemini AI and Immersive Navigation

Google today announced the integration of Gemini AI into Google Maps, introducing a new feature called ‘Ask Maps’. This feature leverages the power of AI to answer complex, real-world questions that traditional maps could not address before. Additionally, Google Maps now offers 3D Immersive Navigation, a significant update to driving directions that has not been seen in over a decade.

Ask Maps: A New Way to Get Answers

The ‘Ask Maps’ feature includes a dedicated button where users can ask specific questions such as, ‘Is there a public tennis court with lights on that I can play at tonight?’ Google Maps can now provide tailored answers based on user searches and saved information within the app. This feature is designed to streamline trip planning by offering detailed information from over 300 million places, including reviews from the Google community.

Immersive Navigation: A Step Forward in Driving Directions

Google Maps has also introduced Immersive Navigation, which offers a 3D view of buildings, overpasses, and terrain. The new feature highlights important road details like lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs, providing a more comprehensive understanding of the route. Gemini models analyze real-world imagery from Street View and aerial photos to provide new details, enhancing the overall navigation experience.

Rollout and Availability

‘Ask Maps’ is currently rolling out in the U.S. and India for both iOS and Android users, with plans to expand to the desktop version of Google Maps soon. Immersive Navigation is being introduced in the U.S. today, though availability may vary initially. Google expects the feature to expand to eligible iOS and Android devices, as well as CarPlay and Android Auto, over the coming months.
