Introduction
The MacBook Neo, launched on March 11, 2026, is the latest addition to Apple’s lineup and comes with a price tag of $599 (or $499 for students). MacRumors videographer Dan Barbera has been using it daily over the past two weeks to conduct an in-depth review.
Performance
The A18 Pro chip, despite being paired with only 8GB of RAM, is powerful enough to handle everyday tasks such as web browsing, video watching, document management, writing, social media scrolling, and email sending. The MacBook Neo performs well in these areas without any significant performance issues.
While the 8GB of RAM might seem insufficient compared to other Macs that come with at least 16GB, Apple’s efficient use of memory means most users won’t miss having more RAM. However, for tasks requiring substantial computing power like video editing or running multiple applications simultaneously, performance may be impacted.
Display and Ports
The MacBook Neo does not feature Apple’s top-tier display but is still comparable to the MacBook Air in terms of quality. It lacks True Tone technology for adjusting screen brightness according to ambient lighting conditions.
- Two USB-C ports, one limited to USB 2 speeds (480Mb/s), and another at USB 3 speeds (10Gb/s)
- No Thunderbolt port
- No MagSafe charger or SD card slot
- No HDMI port
- Trackpad is mechanical instead of Force Touch, but it functions similarly to the latter
Battery Life and Design
The battery life on the MacBook Neo is impressive, lasting up to 16 hours with a full charge. The device’s power consumption is low enough that users can extend its runtime using small portable chargers.
Design-wise, the MacBook Neo weighs just 2.7 pounds and comes in fun colors such as blush, citrus, silver, and indigo. It’s designed primarily for students on a budget, parents buying their child’s first laptop, or individuals needing a basic machine for everyday online tasks.
Storage Options
The MacBook Neo is available with either 256GB or 512GB of storage. The latter option includes Touch ID and is recommended due to the additional security feature.
Market Impact
This entry-level Mac has disrupted the low-end market, prompting PC manufacturers like ASUS to take notice. Nick Wu, CFO at ASUS, described the MacBook Neo as a
