Apple Launches Uncommon iOS 18 Security Patch
Apple has released a rare security update for iOS 18.7.7 and iPadOS 18.7.7, addressing the DarkSword exploit that poses a significant threat to iPhone users.
The Threat of DarkSword Exploit
DarkSword, a vulnerability in iOS, allows malicious entities to take control of an iPhone if the user visits a compromised website. This exploit has been used by hacker groups targeting individuals in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Ukraine.
Apple’s Response
Apple told Wired that it would release updates for more devices to ensure users with auto-update enabled receive the necessary security update. Initially limited to iPhone XS and XR models, iOS 18.7.7 is now available for a wider range of iPhones.
Encouraging Upgrades to iOS 26
Apple encourages users to upgrade to iOS 26, which already includes protection against DarkSword, even if they have opted out of automatic updates. Devices running iOS 26 are inherently protected from this exploit.
Rare Exception for Security Updates
It is unusual for Apple to provide security updates to users who prefer not to upgrade to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS, as these updates typically serve as a means to encourage upgrades. However, due to the severity of DarkSword, Apple has made an exception.
