Uber Expands Its ‘Go Electric’ Grant Nationwide
Uber has announced the expansion of its $4,000 Go Electric grant, which was previously available in select locations such as California, Colorado, Massachusetts, and New York City. This initiative aims to encourage drivers to switch from gasoline vehicles to electric ones.
The Grant’s Purpose
The money is intended for drivers who wish to replace their gas-guzzling cars with electric vehicles (EVs). With rising fuel costs since the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran last month, Uber drivers are particularly affected as increased fuel prices directly impact their earnings.
Challenges in EV Adoption
- The elimination of federal incentives for EV purchases has made it less attractive for many drivers to switch.
- No more federal incentives such as the $7,500 tax credit for new EVs and $4,000 for used ones.
Uber’s Efforts to Promote EV Adoption
To accelerate EV adoption among its drivers, Uber has:
- Begun offering direct payments through the Go Electric grant.
- Negotiated discounts with automakers for EV purchases by Uber drivers.
- Partnered with Kia to offer exclusive discounts on electric models like the Niro and EV6 ($1,000 off) and EV9 ($1,500 off).
Future Goals
Uber aims to have 286,000 EV drivers globally but is far from its goal of being completely carbon neutral in North America and Europe by 2030 and all global markets by 2040.
