Apple Sets Privacy Rules for Third-Party Access to Live Activities and Notifications

Apple has introduced new privacy rules in its Developer Program License Agreement, specifically addressing third-party access to live activities and notifications on iOS devices. These changes are part of Apple’s efforts to comply with the EU’s interoperability requirements under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

New Rules for Third-Party Access

According to a new section titled “3.3.3 (J),” third-party developers are restricted from using forwarded information for advertising, profiling, training models, or monitoring location. Additionally, they cannot disseminate this information to other applications or devices beyond the authorized target accessory.

Data Security and Privacy

The new rules mandate that developers must not store forwarded notification data on servers, in the cloud, or any remote device. The data can only be decrypted on the accessory itself and cannot be altered in a way that changes its meaning. Furthermore, the receiving accessory is prohibited from sharing this data with other devices.

Developer Responsibility

Apple reserves the right to forward notifications to third-party accessories even if an app does not use these frameworks, provided the user enables it. This underscores Apple’s commitment to maintaining strict privacy controls and preventing unauthorized access or misuse of data.
